My Quilts #288-#294 ~ Quilts For Kids 2022

Image
Last year, I put together these fabric and pattern "kits" and finally found the time to complete them..  Using my GO! Big cutter, I spent a couple of days doing all the cutting. I was able to sew one or two quilt tops a day because they were small and everything I needed was together. Then I spent a couple of days quilting them with a simple overall stipple design and binding them by machine.  Overall, it took less than 2 weeks from cutting to binding. So happy to donate these 7 quilts to Project Linus. June 2022 Donated June 2022

My Quilts #275-#282 ~ Project Linus Comfort Quilts 2022

Finally got around to finishing the stack of 8 baby quilt tops I made in February last year. The pink and blue baby quilts measure on average 40" x 49" and were the first ones I quilted on my new Handiquilter Moxie. This is a close-up of the fabric I used.  I fell in love with it when I found it several years ago at a discount fabric store.  I bought several yards of each color with no pattern in mind except that I would make baby quilts to donate.  I just couldn't resist these adorable animals.   I made these two kids' quilts with a Mickey Mouse print that had been in my stash for a while. I used the Warm Wishes pattern, and each quilt measures 39" x 49". One backing has a bright balloon print and the other has a colorful crayon print. And, I used an E2E balloon quilting design. My Quilts #268 ~ Dr. Seuss Warm Wishes 2021

Finished Size:  39" x 49" This Dr. Seuss Warm Wishes quilt is the second charity quilt from a stack of tops I made in February. I used an E2E quilt design called Picket that reminds me of spacemen. The backing is a colorful crayon print and the binding is a red with white polka dot print. September 2021 Donated June 2022

My Quilts #267 ~ Heavenly Bodies Charity Quilt 2021

Image
Finished Size: 50" x 62" My first charity quilt finished in 2021 which I started in February.  The pattern is Warm Wishes,  and it is one of my favorite patterns for kids' quilts. I love the main fabric with the planets and heavenly bodies. I did an overall quilting design called Picket, which I think looks like spacemen or aliens, and I found this perfect backing with the constellations. I used polyester batting and attached the binding by machine which I do for all of my kids' quilts.  The quilt is larger than the baby quilts I usually donate.  I think this size is much better for an older child. My Quilts #252 ~ Dia De Los Muertos Charity Quilt 2020

Image
I'm always on the lookout for fast and easy patterns for my kids' charity quilts.  And, when I saw this quilt, I was inspired to make my own.  It not only looked fast and easy to make, but it also used fabric with a Dia De Los Muertos print similar to the one in my stash. I searched for a pattern but didn't find one so I created my own. But I have not been 100% happy with my top since I saw it on my design wall.  I think the printed squares are too small which  I cut at 4.5".  Now that I see it displayed I'm thinking the squares should be larger, maybe 5.5". I'll have to go back to the drawing board for the next one. This is the first quilt ever that I quilted using an edge-to-edge pantograph.  I got the nerve to try after watching a YouTube video.  It's not perfect but now that it's quilted, I feel much better about my Dia De Los Muertos charity quilt. The quilt measures 42" x 52".  It has a polka dot sheet for the backing, and I used a ...

My Quilts #250 ~ Dr. Seuss Kids Quilt 2020

Image
I started this quilt in 2016 intending to make it for my granddaughter. I cut out the center squares and made the star blocks, but then I put the project aside. I recently rediscovered the quilt top and am happy it's now finished. I did not use a pattern for this layout but this simple design has 6" squares and sawtooth star blocks with sashing and cornerstones.  It has a narrow border because I decided it didn't really need an additional wider border. The quilt measures 47" x 56" and I quilted it on my Bernina with stitch-in-the-ditch, straight stitching, and outline stitching.  The batting is pieced from Warm and Natural remnants.  The backing has an overall multi-color "Peace Sign" design. DGD#3 is no longer into Dr. Seuss so this cute quilt will be donated to Project Linus. Read more about this quilt here . September 2020

My Quilts #245 ~ Quilts For Kids Kit 2020

This is the third and last quilt kit I've completed for Touch of Comfort Quilts for Kids. This was a kit my daughter ordered in 2015 but never started.  I accidentally stumbled upon it in 2019 and decided to finish it myself. I quilted it with FMQ on my short-arm Mega Quilter and used an all-over hearts and loops design. It's not perfect but it gets the job done. I used a fluffy polyester batting which gives it a textured look.  The quilt measures 36" x 41" and I'm pretty happy with it.  I hope the recipient will be happy with it too. Warm Wishes Pattern These charity kids' quilts are the last two from the 2009 stack of quilt tops.  The pattern for both quilts is Warm Wishes from Quiltmaker magazine 2000.  This is one of my all-time favorite patterns.  They each measure 36" x 47".  They were quilted on my short-arm Mega Quilt with an all-over squiggle and loop design. This is the original stack of 11 quilts from 2009. And here are the 7 finished quilts today, minus the 4 that were gifted.  Ten+ years in the making but better late than never! July 2020

These quilts were made from kits from the Downey Touch of Comfort program in partnership with Quilts For Kids.  I'm a little abashed because I've had these kits since 2013 and I can't believe it's taken me this long to get them finished. In 2010, I made three quilts from requested kits and thought I had made my final contribution.  I honestly do not remember requesting any more kits but in October 2019 I discovered not 2 but 3 kits!  Two had a packing slip dated 2013 with my name.  The third kit had a slip from 2015 with DD's name. This 4-patch pattern is so simple and easy to make.  They measure 36" x 42" and are a perfect size for a small child. Read more about these quilts here . These are the first quilts I've finished this year.  They are also my first quilts of the new decade.  So far 2020 has been a turbulent year, starting with a pandemic and national emergency, then add to that riots and public outcry over police brut...

RAIL FENCE PATTERN BASKETWEAVE PATTERN These charity kids' quilts are also from the 2009 stack of quilt tops.  The patterns for both quilts are by Ursula Reikes.  I love her series of  Quilts for Baby  books.  They each measure 39" square.   This makes 9 quilts that I've finished from the stack which means I have 2 more left to complete.   November 2015

Warm Wishes - 38" x 48" It's A Snap - 35" x 46" X-quisite Block 46" x 46" These three kids' quilts are from a stack of quilt tops that have been patiently waiting to be finished since 2009!  A few months ago I started quilting the tops but didn't get around to binding them.  Last month, however, I finished four of them to give as gifts.  And, now these three are quilted and bound, ready to be donated. Here is the stack of 11 tops that have been sitting around since 2009. I’ve been creating kids' quilts for Project Linus since 2001 and have donated close to 50 quilts.  This makes 7 additional quilts with four more tops to go! November 2015

My Quilts #229-#231 ~ Wrapped in Love 2015

Isaiah and His H-Block Quilt Israel and His H-Block Quilt Nathan and His Warm Wishes Quilt These little guys are my BFF Vivian’s grandsons, and all three celebrate their birthdays in October.  Another last-minute invitation prompted me to grab 3 of the unfinished tops, which made it possible for me to complete their quilts in time for their party. The two quilts are from the Ursula Reikes book “Even More Quilts for Baby” and use the H-Block pattern.  The third quilt is the ever-popular Warm Wishes pattern. I was thrilled to see the smile on their faces, and mom was so touched she had tears in her eyes.  And that’s why I quilt! October 2015

My Quilt #228 ~ Baby Crackers for Ariana 2015

Image
First finished quilt of 2015 I finally came back to quilting after a five-year hiatus. I can't believe this is the first quilt I've finished since 2010! This quilt is made from a stack of flimsy tops that I've had since 2009, just waiting to be finished. I didn't actually make the quilt top myself; I bought it on eBay intending to finish it and donate it to charity. The block pattern is a vintage design called "Crackers." I completed the quilt and gifted it to Ariana, my friend's granddaughter when she celebrated her baptism. October 2015

I just completed my fourth quilt for the Downy Touch of Comfort Quilts For Kids project.  Three are from requested kits and the fourth is from my fabric stash.  And, for now, this completes my contribution to this worthwhile program.  I’ll continue to make quilts for kids through Project Linus, which keeps my donations locally; and, I can also deliver my finished quilts to one of my neighbors who helps coordinate the local chapter … no shipping costs! The Touch of Comfort project was so much fun, and the quilts were fast and easy.  It was always exciting to receive the kit in the mail to see what fun fabrics had been sent.  I do hope they reach their goal of 10,000 quilts before the end of the year. My Quilt #212 ~ Wrapped in Hope Quilt 2010

Image
Another Wrapped In Hope quilt … this is the third quilt I have donated to this wonderful program.  This quilt is for Christian from California, and he likes Spider-man and books. I already had the Spider-man material in my stash, which I’d purchased a couple years back.  I alternated the 6-inch squares with red, white & blue Hourglass blocks.  So simple, but what a great design!  Do you see the secondary design the blocks create … the white star? My friend Mary also made a Wrapped in Hope quilt.  Here we are in the parking lot of the community center right before our guild meeting.  Her quilt has butterflies and a pretty pink flannel backing.  Perfect for a sweet young lady! My Quilt #211 ~ Quilts For Kids 2010

This is my second Touch of Comfort quilt for Quilts for Kids, which I named “Robot Fun”.  I blogged about my first QFK quilt here . Look at the really cute backing they sent for the quilt.  I think it’s adorable and should bring many smiles to one lucky recipient! This is the 2nd quilt I also sent.  The quilt top was made by my friend Mary … so half the work was already done and I was able to finish it up in no time at all. May 2010
