My Quilts #307: Jericho Walls Stash Buster Quilt 2022

Image
Finished Size: 76" x 90" I made this quilt for the 2022 Stash Buster Challenge by Border Creek Station.  The challenge was to create 52 blocks (1 block a week) by the end of the year to be entered into a drawing.   The block is Jericho Walls and I enjoyed making the blocks so much that I finished  the quilt top  in May. There are 32 blocks, each measuring 10" finished.   I used some really old and "ugly" fabrics from my stash but love how it all came together. The quilting design is Trailing Leaves, an E2E design from the Pro-Stitcher Lite Design Catalog, and the batting is Warm & Natural. I used some charm packs for the piano border and each strip measured 2½" x 5" unfinished.  The inner border and binding are the same red fabric. I used a new full-size sheet that I bought at a thrift store for the backing of my quilt. I don't really like the sheet, but I didn't want to use any of my fabric stashes to piece the backing, and I certainly d...

My Quilts #298: Blue Weed Whacker 2022

Image
Finished size:  76" x 93" Quilt Pattern: Weed Whacker by Bonnie Hunter of Quiltville I started this quilt in 2008 and 14 years later,  I decided it was time to finish it. I quilted it with an E2E design called Audree that is pre-installed in the HandiQuilter ProStitcher. The pieced backing is definitely not by design.  When I saw the fabric with the bird design, I knew I wanted to use it for the backing.  Unfortunately, I didn't buy enough and had no choice but to use a different fabric for the middle.   I ended up with a pieced strip at the bottom because the backing wasn't long enough, and I didn't realize it until I got to the last quilting row.  The quilting design at the end does not match perfectly but it's good enough.  Finished is better than perfect! I love this quilt, and it is part of my personal collection. August 2022

My Quilts #251 ~ Happy Halloween Scrappy Stars 2020

Image
I recently came across these star blocks when I was going through my things. I made them in 2015 when I was working on a quilt for my granddaughter which I finally finished last year. For some reason, I made 40 blocks but only used 26 for her quilt, which left me with 14 blocks. I decided to use those blocks to make a small quilt or wall hanging for myself.  I love the stars and colors.   I quilted this on my regular Bernina machine with diagonal straight stitching and stitch-in-the-ditch along the stars and sashing.  The backing is a mish-mash of 2 extra blocks and leftover Halloween fabric.  The batting is pieced from Warm and Natural remnants. And, I attached a sleeve to the top so I can display it.  The wall hanging measures 41" x 51". Read more about this quilt here . September 2020

My Quilt #227 ~ Y2K Charm Quilt Top 2010

Image
This is my second Y2K 2000 Charm Quilt top.  I started this top in 2006 and hope to complete it by the end of the year. It seems only yesterday that we were at once excited and anxious about the new millennium.  To celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime event, many quilters wanted to create a Y2K quilt with 2000 different squares (“charms”) of fabric.  There were many swapping groups.  I participated in several and was able to collect enough charms to make THREE quilts, each with 2000 squares!  So, here we are many years later, and I’ve barely finished piecing the second top.  Hopefully, I can get it quilted before the end of the next decade! And, yes, I still have 80 more “squishes” stored away, each with 25 charms, waiting to be finished into a quilt! UPDATE 12/31/20 :  I finally completed this second Y2K Millennium Quilt and posted about it  here . This ends the 2010 Quilt Parade with 27 quilt projects, including 11 sales and 8 cha...

My Quilt #221 ~ David’s Plaid Dorm Quilt 2010

Image
I've wanted  to make a quilt for my son David for a while.  I had a collection of plaids and homespun fabric that I thought he might like, but I couldn’t decide on a pattern I thought he would like.  One day I was flipping through my old quilting magazines when I stumbled upon this plaid dorm quilt from a Fons & Porter magazine. Plaid Dorm Quilt from Fons & Porter I thought this dorm quilt would be perfect since he is now living in a dorm after recently transferring to Cal Berkeley.  I hope this quilt will bring him some warmth and comfort during the cool fall & winter seasons while he’s away from home. The quilt has 168 five-inch finished squares and has a 12 x 14 setting.  It has a soft flannel backing and measures 58” x 66”.  I used Warm & Natural batting and quilted it with a simple line design. I’m happy with how it turned out and hope David will treasure it forever! July 2010

My Quilt #220 ~ Bouillabaisse Quilt Top 2010

Image
My bouillabaisse quilt top is FINALLY finished!  I started it in September 2009 and have  been working on it off and on.  And, in July I committed to finishing it.  It has twenty blocks and each block is 20-1/2 inches.  It measures 97 square inches, with a 6-1/2 inch border. This is the second bouillabaisse quilt I’ve made, but I had so many issues with it! It seems that no matter how many 1-3/4” strips I cut, it just wasn’t enough!  But the real dizzies were the points and bias edges … OMG, by the last few blocks, I couldn’t care less whether anything matched:  I just wanted to get ‘er done!  It’s shown on a queen-size bed, and it’s the second queen-size quilt top I’ve made. I’m not sure yet whether I will quilt it myself or send it out.  I’m definitely keeping this one so I’m really leaning towards sending it to a LA quilter.  But, for now, it’s in my “To Be Quilted” pile! This is a picture of the original bouillabaisse qui...

My Quilt #215 ~ Dutchman’s Puzzle Nickel Quilt Top 2010

Image
Another nickel quilt from Pat Speth’s book!  The pattern is "Dutchman’s Puzzle", and the quilt measures 55 x 69 inches.  Again, I used old scraps that I just wanted to get rid of use up.  I didn’t even enjoy the process of sewing the blocks and thought for sure the top would be a real loser.  But look at it now … it just all came together once I added the two borders.  The outer border is a red paisley that I love.  This may be one of my favorites once I finish quilting it! June 2010 UPDATE:  Sold on Etsy in December 2010 for $57

My Quilt #214 ~ Autumn Stretched Star Nickel Quilt 2010

Image
I made this quilt from scraps that I’ve had around for years.  Individually, these squares are outdated and not very inspiring.  But put them together into a scrappy quilt, and they all somehow work beautifully together! The pattern for this quilt is “Autumn Stretched Star” from Pat Speth’s “Nickel Quilts” book, and I used an alternate X–O block arrangement.  The design is created with 5-inch squares from fall-theme fabric and 2-1/2” squares in a cream color. I t measures 57” square , and I quilted it with an overall stippling design.  This was an easy and fast pattern! June 2010

My Quilt #213 ~ Patriotic Roman Stripes Quilt 2010

Image
This is my second string quilt for the two string-quilt challenges I’m participating in.  I blogged about my first string quilt here . I thought the Memorial Day weekend was a good time to finish this one. I’ll be donating this quilt to the Quilts of Valor program. I started it in March and posted about it here .  It all began with a pile of strings in patriotic fabrics that I’ve had for years.  The quilt measures 52 x 65 inches. May 2010 UPDATED:  Sold on eBay in May 2011 for $45

My Quilt #207 ~ Tillie’s Treasures Quilt 2010

Image
This is another Nickel Quilt using fabrics from my stash.  I’ve had some of these fabrics for YEARS, and I am still trying to use them all up.  They are so outdated, but I promised myself I’d use up these old fabrics before I bought new fabrics. I’ve made several quilts from Pat Speth’s Nickel Quilt books, but this one was quite challenging.  It was my problem child!  The technique was not difficult, but cutting & sewing all those 2-1/2” squares and half-square triangles was time-consuming… not to mention that I had to be careful when sewing the blocks together. Of course, I was in a hurry to finish … too bad I made a mistake when I laid out the design and didn’t notice until after I'd sewn several rows.  I had to “unsew” everything, lay it out right, and then sew it all up again.  I was fed up!  I put it away for a few weeks before finally finishing it up. I machine-quilted it myself with an all-over meander/loopy design.  And, I us...

My Quilt #202 ~ Novelty String Quilt 2010

Image
This 48 x 60 inch quilt was part of an online blogging project on Stephanie’s Loft Creations blog and her “No Strings Attached” challenge, as well as Stacie’s “It’s a String Thing” challenge. I sewed novelty strings (or strips) onto used dryer sheets and did an all-over loopy meander design to keep the quilting simple and not take away from the top. For the backing, I used a Raggedy Ann-Andy print with a medical theme that shows the characters dressed as doctors and nurses.  January 2010 UPDATE:  Sold on eBay in March 2011 for $40

My Quilt #197 ~ Millennium Star Quilt Top 2009

This is a lap-size quilt with 16 Millennium Star blocks and a 4 x 4 setting.  October 2009
