In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated the southeast but was especially brutal in New Orleans where the levies gave way and destroyed the majority of the city, leaving thousands homeless. I just happened to be visiting DD and family in Tennessee when Katrina hit and it was wild!
As with 9/11, quilters everywhere rallied together to provide quilts to those who lost everything. One LQS in Monrovia really stepped up to the plate with a MAJOR effort to send quilts to Katrina Survivors.
Tons of fabric and batting were donated to the store, and quilters from surrounding areas volunteered hours to cut and sew the quilt tops. Local long-arm quilters also donated hours of quilting; and still others volunteered to bind the quilts once they came back from the LA quilters.
Even though I did not make any of these 20 quilts, I did do all the binding by machine and so I have included them in My Quilt Parade.
I don’t know if anyone documented any of the quilts for the Katrina Survivors, but I felt that it was important to take pictures of the ones that I could. Some of these are very simple … just squares sewn together … but they are all beautiful! And I’m glad I was able to be a part of this effort.
